Version 3.0 Patchlevel 5 Added Features/Bug Fixes

1. Fix a problem with certain HP and Solaris compilors. These compilors do not like short or char in function prototypes! Thanks to Jaap Haalboom <haalboom@natlab.research.philips.com> for pointing out the problem.
